Are you looking to continue your rehabilitative treatment while practicing physical distancing and self-isolating?
Good news! pt Health now offers virtual physiotherapy, giving you the opportunity to receive treatment from the comfort of your own home through video conference technology.
Wondering how virtual physiotherapy works? In this Spotlight, we’ll share some first hand information from one of our physiotherapists with you.
George Cernan, Clinic Team Manager and Physiotherapist at Cowie Hill Physiotherapy – pt Health has been offering virtual physiotherapy here for the past few weeks.
Today, we’re talking to George about his experience with this service so far.
Q: Tell us about the type of treatments you can provide through virtual physiotherapy.
A: There are multiple treatment options that a physiotherapist can offer through virtual care. One of the most important is education about the patient’s condition and to provide patients with tools for self-treatment.
This most often involves teaching, reviewing and progressing individualized exercise programs. Some of the manual therapy done by physiotherapist can be accomplished through self-mobilization techniques that can also be taught through a virtual appointment.
And just as important, the virtual physiotherapy ensures a continuation of care, answers patients’ questions, and enables the patients to stay connected while they participate in their own rehabilitation.
Q: What has the patient experience been like with virtual care?
A: Patients who participated in virtual care have been very appreciative that their physiotherapy can continue, and some have been pleasantly surprised how much can be accomplished in an online session.
Their questions get answered, their exercises are progressed as needed, and they are making better recovery while being more active participants in their own treatment.
Q: Can you share your favourite story of how you helped a patient with virtual care?
A: One of my clients has been concerned about his in person visits ending due to the current COVID-19 crisis, but at the same time was hesitant to continue treatment through virtual therapy due to his limited computer skills.
We agreed that his son would help him with the set up and we managed to connect after two weeks of no treatments. While it took the patient a few minutes to get comfortable with the video interface, he ended up really enjoying it.
He was amazed how much we accomplished in the session without physically being in the clinic and is now looking forward to his next virtual appointment.
