February is Psychology month, and we wanted to recognize a few of the psychologists we have here on staff here at pt Health. First up we are chatting with Karen Smith, Psychologist at our Cole Harbour Integrated Health Services – pt Health clinic in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
“I have been a practicing clinical psychologist for over 14 years. I graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Science (Psychology and Criminology) and then completed post-graduate work at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador receiving a Masters in Counseling Psychology.
I have worked in many different areas including Forensics, Mental Health and Addictions and most recently with a diverse population at pt Health. I have been with pt Health for almost five years.
In my current position, I work with individuals who are both, active and retired military, as well as, clients who have mental health and addiction issues, pain management difficulties, trauma and those diagnosed with personality disorders. My preferred treatment modality is Dialectal Behavioral Therapy which affords clients the opportunity to gain coping skills which aid in being able to manage life in a healthy manner. I also use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, and Mindfulness.
I enjoy my role in the team. I have gained extensive knowledge working with a physical treatment team. It has been an exciting learning opportunity to take a position with pt Health because it is a type of multi-disciplinary team that was unfamiliar and new to me; it has been a great experience. We have a lot of fun at work which makes coming to work every day a pleasure.
Outside of the workplace, I enjoy self-care, reading, movie and trivia nights, going to the gym and frequent travel. I am currently pursuing a new hobby, painting, which I am told there is no “looks good” or “looks bad”…I think I disagree.”
