Celebrating Your Golden Years

As we get older, the number of candles on our birthday cake grows, but that number doesn’t need to play a role in how we feel. Remember, age is just a number.

While we may start noticing the changes in our body as we age, there are many different ways to help you stay healthier longer. With these five tips, you can make sure you are doing what you can to ensure that your golden years are something you can enjoy. Because this next stage of your life is something to be celebrated!

Exercise

Exercise is a big component when it comes to staying healthy. Not only does it keep your mobility strong, it can help to keep your heart young and also improve your mood and brainpower. Try exercising at least 3 times a week for as little as 30 minutes. Even getting out for a 30-minute walk daily is a great way to introduce exercise into your life.

Vitamins

Getting your daily dose of vitamins helps to keep your body healthy. Incorporating different fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meat and healthy oils like olive oil into your diet is a great way to get your daily intake. Fruits and vegetables like kiwis, oranges, and red peppers are high in vitamin C, so be sure to add those to your grocery list!

Social Interaction

As you start to age, it is important to maintain a broad social network. Doing so will not only give you a sense of companionship but it could also help decrease your risk of dementia. A great way to accomplish this to try something new; maybe join a class or learn a new language.

Sleep

Sleep is the best way to ensure that your body is rested and ready for the next day. It is recommended that adults 65+ get between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. As you age you may find that falling asleep or staying asleep becomes harder due to certain medications, menopause, or insomnia. This is why an afternoon nap can help you feel rejuvenated.

Schedule Regular Check-Ups

As you age, it is important to stay on top of your overall health. That means booking regular check-ups with your doctor, dentist, optometrist and physiotherapist to ensure all areas of your body are healthy.

Did you know that falls are the leading cause of non-fatal injuries among older adults? Ever 13 seconds, a senior is treated in the emergency room for a fall. Physiotherapy is a great way to work on your balance in order to prevent falls in the future. Keeping up with regular check-ups will also help you to catch any problems before they can become unmanageable. Early detection is key to help you live a long and healthy life.

Growing older is not something to fear. Using these five tips can help to ensure your next chapter is the best one yet. If you are unsure about implementing any changes into your routine, or the effect it might have on your health, please check with your doctor or physiotherapist.
